Frequently Asked Questions For Canes

How do I measure for a cane?

The proper use of a cane requires that it be of the correct length. Stand erect with the shoes you will be normally using for wear or with the shoes with the highest heel. Allow your arms to relax in a natural position down from your side. Measure from the floor to the bend in the wrist bone. This is the correct length of your cane. Always error on the side of too long rather that too short; you can always cut off a little extra after you have used you cane for a few days.

Is their a correct way to walk with a cane?

The cane is being used for support for the weakest or injured leg. That means it can be used in the left of right hand. Generally the cane is used on the opposite side as the weakest leg to help eliminate strain. When the weakest leg moves forward, the cane moves with it which helps support some of the weight off the leg. Follow your instincts; if this is not comfortable then switch hands so the cane is assisting you and lessening any pain. If you are using the cane for stability or balance you can use the hand you prefer.

Why does the cane need a tip on the end?

Without a tip the cane could easily slip. When the tip becomes worn, it should be replaced. Always purchase an extra tip when you order a cane as this will eliminate a shipping charge in the future

Why should I have a strap on the cane?

The strap is way to "store" the cane when not in use. This is handy when you need both hands while shopping or writing something. The strap can be used over your hand when the cane is not being used.

Will the cane support my weight?

All of our canes will support at least 250 pounds, unless we noted otherwise. Some of the novelty canes with hollow shafts should not be used for body support. Some of our geriatric cane will support up to 500 pounds.

How do I know which cane to purchase?

What you will be using the cane for is most important. Do you need the cane for support? Will you be traveling a lot so a folding cane would be more appropriate? Do you need the cane for just a little added stability? The design of the handle is the most important aspect. The primary handle types are as follows:

Fritz: This handle is specifically designed for arthritic use. The ergonomic grip shape is design to minimize pressure on the hands.

Derby: The most popular type handle. The shape offers a more reliable sense of balance to the user as the persons weight is centered over the shaft. This type of handle can be used for any condition from limited to full time use.

Crook: The crook or tourist handle is the most wide known classic type of handle. Because of the style, the handle does not give much support, and is not recommended for a person that needs a cane for constant use. The cane can be used for occasional use.

Palm Grip: The most wide accepted handle for long term use. The handle relieves pressure on the hand as the weight is dissipated over a wider area. The palm grip provides the best stability of all other handles. Care should be taken when you order as the grip is made to fit either the right hand or the left.
